Interview with Ari Bertz - June 2023
My journey into becoming an artist didn't begin in an art studio but rather in the operating room. As a doctor and surgeon, I was deeply entrenched in the study of the human body and its complex anatomy. Each dissection, each surgery, was a profound exploration of the body's innermost secrets.
Yet, it wasn't just the science that captivated me; it was the beauty of the human body, its graceful proportions, and expressive features. I began to explore this aspect of my knowledge through portrait and figure drawing, which became my initial foray into the world of art.
Observing and sketching people became my way of expressing my understanding and admiration for the human body in a different manner than through surgery. However, it wasn't enough. I wanted to challenge myself further, to break free from boundaries and explore new forms of creativity.
So, I delved into "scribble art," an unconventional approach to art where I allowed my thoughts to flow freely as I sketched people in motion. It was as if I liberated myself from the strict lines of anatomy and allowed myself to explore the dynamic and unpredictable nature of the human form.
This journey has not only made me an artist but also enriched my perspective as a doctor and surgeon. I now see the human body not just as an object to study and treat but as a living masterpiece, a source of infinite inspiration and beauty.
Through my art, I aim to share this vision with the world, to challenge viewers to look beyond the obvious and discover the beauty that lies in every single detail of human existence. For me, art isn't just about creating images; it's about forging connections and inspiring change, both in the heart and in the mind.
